On our way to Dunedin we had to stop at Moeraki Village to check out the world famous boulders. We attempted to in 2008, but we took too long at Fleurs Restaurant / Food Truck that we had to motor and said we would be back … Here we are in 2025 (16 years later and we got there this time.)
Initially we were a little bummed that the weather was not on our side after the last 3 days being sublime. However, the cloudy weather and fog actually added to the mystery and uniqueness of this phenomenon.
The Moeraki Boulders are a large collection on Koekohe Beach and are made of calcite concretions that formed about 65 million years ago. Apparently, they were formed from a combination of calcite from mudstone, shell fragments, and pebbles.
There are about 2 dozens of these spheres on the beach, where a couple have broken open. The insides resemble a yellowish amethyst material and are quite striking.
Onwards to Dunedin and a few days of exploring the area …
Cheers
